Climatization of EU Policies: The case of Maritime Transport (EU-CLIMT) (September 2025 - today)
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (Grant agreement ID: 101150663) [funded by the EU]

The objective of this project is to explore the ways in which climatization influences EU governance and impacts the power of the institutional actors. To do so, the case study of maritime transport will be employed, as it is one of the main policy areas indicated in the Fit for 55 package as crucial for the decarbonization of the European continent. In more detail, the project will analyze, first, the role of the supranational actors in promoting climate policies within the EU, with a focus on maritime transport; second, the implementation of the new green maritime transport policies by key stakeholders within the EU Member States; and, third, the impact of the said new policies on the EUs diplomatic positions at the international level and how these are perceived by third actors.

The project is hosted at the Institute of Political Science of Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Policymaking of artificial intelligence (AI)
Research funded by the ICOS – Towards a functional continuum operating system [HORIZON Project, funded by the EU, Grant agreement ID: 101070177] (February 2024 - December 2024)

Policymaking of AI is a contemporary issue that gains growing scholarly attention, but the outcomes are still limited. This project explored the complex institutional framework of developing AI policy in Greece, a frontrunner regarding the developments of AI in the EU. The research output is currently under review.

The project was hosted at the Department of Ports Management and Shipping at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.

I aim to continue working on this subject, exploring the latest national, European, and international developments.

Green requirements of European ports: Responsibilities, jurisdiction, implementation
Postdoctoral research at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens [funded by the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF)] (October 2022 - June 2025)

The EU develops a port policy that will carry a significant burden of the enforcement of the climate change requirements that the EU expects the shipping industry to implement. The research question is: In what ways does the EU establish a port policy that strives to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from shipping? The research objective is to examine the “new” green EU port policy that will impact both the internal EU seaborne transportation and international shipping. A scholarly article was published. Apart from the research part, the postdoctoral fellowship also included the transformation of my PhD thesis into a book and teaching obligations at the undergraduate program of the hosting Department in the course ‘Climate Diplomacy’.

Assessment of climate change and environmental degradation effects on children in Greece
at ELIAMEP, supported by UNICEF (April - October 2024) - position: PI & Senior Researcher

The climate crisis demands immediate attention, particularly concerning its effects on vulnerable populations, notably children. The project aims to explore and analyze the critical challenges faced by Greek children in the wake of environmental disasters, such as widespread forest fires and devastating floods in Thessaly, accelerated phenomena in the era of climate “permacrisis”. The program aims to investigate the intersection of climate change and child well-being and contribute to national health, education, and social equity goals. This will take place through the development of a plan to mitigate the effects of climate change on children based on an assessment report on the impact of climate change and environmental degradation on children in Greece. The final report is available here.

Resilience and Recovery in Greece – a Hub for Climate Change
Program partners: Democracy & Culture Foundation (DCF), Resilient Cities Catalyst (RCC), ELIAMEP

The cumulative impact of climate change and the COVID-19 crisis brought forward the necessity to reevaluate our current urban and socio-economic development model, and to reassess it through the prism of the ever more relevant notion of resilience. As a Senior Researcher of the program, I supervised the research conducted (June - December 2021) to establish the digital platform of the Climate Change Hub, which is a dynamic and interactive tool that gathers, in a single point of reference (one stop shop), all relevant data and information from different stakeholders active or involved in climate change action, namely the 332 municipalities, civil society organizations, the private and the wider public sector alike, up until 2021. Since then, I have been the Scientific Advisor of the Climate Change Hub.

I have also participated, as a Junior Research Fellow, in projects concerning environmental governance at large, at the Institute of European Integration and Policy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens:

  • Effectiveness of international climate regulation and climate diplomacy (September - December 2019),

  • Observatory for climate change in Southeast Europe (October 2017 - September 2018),

  • Monitoring international environmental practice (October 2016 - September 2017).
